Eric Olega, from Terego district in
Northern Uganda, faced immense challenges to the point that making 100
shillings (0.025 €) a day was just a dream. He is a school-drop out and this meant
that securing employment was difficult. In addition, the burden of providing
for his family weighed heavily on his shoulders.
Eric's life took a significant turn when he
decided to participate in a training in bricklaying and concrete practice offered by Enabel through its
implementing partner, Welthunger. Upon completing the training, Eric's life
changed dramatically. Armed with newfound expertise, he ventured into the
construction industry, building structures. With each brick laid, Eric's
confidence and earnings began to grow. What was once a daily struggle to make
ends meet, evolved into a substantial earning of at least 20,000 shillings (6$)
a day.
“I was a nobody before this skills training
because I dropped out of school in Senior Three for lack of school fees.”
At the time of this interview, the contract
he was working on to build a wall was worth 600,000 (148€) shillings.
“I know that I can take home at least
300,000 shillings (74€) from this contract.”
He is grateful for the skills he has learnt
as a result of the training in bricklaying. His success extends beyond his own
financial stability because he now supports his parents in paying school fees
for his younger siblings, ensuring that they have access to education and
opportunities he never had.
Due to his dedication and positive
attitude, Eric has earned the trust and respect of his employer who entrusted
him with overseeing multiple construction sites in Terego, while the employer
concentrates on other sites in Arua and nearby Congo.
As Eric reflects on his journey, he is
filled with gratitude for the opportunities afforded him through the skills
training by Enabel. What was once a bleak future marked by poverty and uncertainty
has been replaced with hope. He now serves as an inspiration to other youth,
encouraging them not to give up on life but to seize the opportunities
presented by similar skilling programs.
“I encourage other youth not to give up on
life. They should join skilling programs so that they can become like me.”
He urges development organisations like
Enabel to give chance to more youths to acquire skills and benefit from them just
like he did.
