Enabel supported reconstruction of the neurology and rehabilitation departments at the Koriukivka Central District Hospital, Chernihiv region. Investments from the BE-Relieve programme budget amounted to over €1 million.
On 20 July 2026, Minister of Health Viktor Liashko, Head of the Chernihiv Regional State Administration Viacheslav Chaus, Ambassador of Belgium Luc Jacobs, and Enabel Country Director Dirk Deprez visited the hospital for an official inauguration.
The 1,400 sq m department now features a modern occupational therapy space, as well as rooms for physical therapy, speech and language therapy, and assistive technologies. Two accessible lifts have been installed to ensure convenient patient transport.
Inpatient conditions have also been improved: wards have been upgraded to accommodate 20 beds in the rehabilitation unit and 40 in the neurology unit, which includes a stroke unit. Comfortable sanitary rooms equipped with showers and water heaters have been designed.
The next step in supporting the facility will be the procurement of evidence-based rehabilitation equipment. This is part of the Enabel-supported project "Rehabilitation Pathway: From Regional to Community Level”, implemented by Patients of Ukraine and Protez Hub.
Enabel's support also extended to improving working conditions for medical staff: thanks to the partnership between Enabel and the Ministry of Health, a dedicated psychological relief space for staff has been opened in Koriukivka. This is a pilot under the Care for Carers initiative, which envisages creating such spaces in six hospitals across the Chernihiv and Kyiv regions, alongside training on burnout and stress prevention.
With input from Belgian experts, the space was designed to support wellbeing, featuring areas for art therapy, low-intensity physical activity, and coffee breaks, as well as a relaxation area with a massage chair and a curated library of psychologist-recommended books.
