Students at Novi Petrivtsi Lyceum, Kyiv region, have returned to in-person learning following the completion of a new radiation shelter, funded by Belgium and implemented by Enabel.
The school had suspended onsite classes after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion due to the absence of protective infrastructure.
Implemented at the request of Ukraine’s Ministry of Education and Science, the shelter was completed in February 2026 and is the first in a broader series of civil protection projects Enabel is delivering across Ukraine.
In addition to the shelter, Enabel equipped the school with modern kitchen facilities aligned with the national school nutrition reform led by First Lady Olena Zelenska. Accessibility improvements– including ramps and tactile paving – as well as upgraded drainage systems were also delivered through the BE-Relieve programme.
The project was officially inaugurated on 5 May in the presence of regional and local authorities, alongside representatives of the Embassy of Belgium and Enabel. The event featured a student-led healthy food festival and a symbolic tree-planting ceremony near the shelter, underscoring the partnership and long-term commitment to safe and resilient education in Ukraine.
