The Digital for Girls and Women (D4GW) objectives are (1) to improve Enabel’s expertise on the topics of the digital gender divide and digital rights based on targeted actions in this field; and (2) to share the expertise build up based on the implementation of this project at the Belgian and European level, more specifically at the level of the Africa branch of the D4D Hub (which should count as a contribution from Belgium to this mechanism).
The project
aims to promote equal opportunities for women and men to actively participate
and contribute to an inclusive, rights-based digital economy. This is achieved
by improving access to technology and shared infrastructures, enhancing the
digital skills and knowledge of women and girls to effectively and confidently
use digital technologies and navigate the digital world, and providing them
with the necessary support to understand, claim, and assert their digital
rights effectively.
The
intervention directly impacts the lives of women and girls by raising awareness
about the realities, threats, security issues, and rights concerning digital
spaces, including privacy and data protection. The project emphasizes that
human rights principles applicable offline must also extend to the digital
realm. Ensuring freedom of expression and inclusivity in digital spaces
benefits not only men, women, and girls but also marginalized groups, thereby
leveraging the opportunities of digitalization for all.
