Two operators boost Rwanda’s pig farming industry with new slaughterhouses

  • Ntarama Pigs Farm Ltd and KIME Ltd boost Rwanda’s pig farming industry with new slaughterhouses

Ntarama Pigs Farm Ltd and KIME Ltd have reached a significant milestone, marking a major advancement for pig farming in Rwanda. Ntarama’s newly operational slaughterhouse can process 50 pigs daily, while KIME Ltd’s modern facility has the capacity to handle 200 pigs per day, making it the largest pig-slaughtering operation in Rwanda. This development provides a crucial boost to local pig farmers and businesses in the districts of Bugesera and Rusizi and surroundings.

These achievements are part of a broader effort to enhance the productivity and competitiveness of Rwanda’s agricultural sector, supported by the Belgium-funded PRISM-Enabel project through the Access to Technology initiative. These state-of-the-art facilities are a game-changer for local farmers, who have previously struggled to access efficient slaughtering services and stable markets for their pigs. It is expected that the newly acquired pig slaughtering facilities will help transform the pork business by producing high-quality pork products that meet the highest standards of hygiene across the country.

Thanks to the Open Calls programme initiated by National Industrial Research and Development Agency, NIRDA with support from Enabel, these advanced machines were acquired through a combination of a 50% grant and a 50% zero-interest loan, empowering both Ntarama Pigs Farm and KIME Ltd to increase production capacity and meet the growing demand for high-quality pork products.

This progress reflects Rwanda’s commitment to strengthening the pig farming value chain through strategic investments in modern technology. With continued backing from NIRDA and Enabel, Ntarama and KIME Ltd are set to lead the way toward more sustainable, profitable pig farming while adhering to food safety standards for both domestic and regional markets.

Overall, 11 private companies in Rwanda - across poultry, pig farming, and animal feed value chains - have benefited from similar support, receiving machinery, equipment, and technology designed to modernize the industry and enhance  competitiveness, productivity and improve quality.
