Project description

The Nyungwe-Kibira Landscape encompasses Nyungwe National Park in Rwanda and Kibira National Park in Burundi. It is one of the key transboundary landscapes identified across Africa, where biological resources and habitats span national borders, requiring effective conservation coordinated management.

The Nyungwe-Kibira Landscape supports a large rural population that depends heavily on its natural resources for their livelihoods. Population density around Nyungwe is high, estimated at 400 to 500 people per square kilometre. This places considerable pressure on the park’s resources, as local communities rely on the forest for fuelwood, timber, medicinal plants and other non-timber forest products. Agricultural expansion, poaching and climate change have significantly reduced forest cover in the park and its periphery.

The NaturAfrica Project focuses on protecting, restoring and expanding Nyungwe-Kibira forest cover through the following key actions:
  • Integrating 800 ha of native species agroforestry into tea plantations and arable land around Nyungwe National Park, to reconnect corridors between protected areas and buffer zones.
  • Improving the Park management plan, as well as biodiversity monitoring protocols and tools.
  • Restoring private small forests to optimise their productivity and land use, with active involvement of local communities.
  • Supporting community-driven economic activities, such as beekeeping, to increase local incomes and reduce pressure on Nyungwe National Park.
In Rwanda, the initiative covers four districts (Nyamagabe, Nyaruguru, Nyamasheke and Rusizi) and will run for three years. Key partners are the Rwanda Forestry Authority, Nyungwe Management Company, Rwanda Mountain Tea, Rwanda Polytechnic-Kitabi, and the National Land Authority.

By the end of the project, the following results are expected:
  • Harmonised forest management plans for Nyungwe and Kibira national parks, strengthening ecological integration and conservation across the landscape.
  • Agroforestry integrated into tea plantations and arable land using indigenous species, to enhance biodiversity, improve soil health and provide local communities with sources of income.
  • 80 ha of private small forests restored, with farmers equipped with skills in sustainable forest management.
