On April 21, Enabel was pleased to host the “Brave Faces of Resilience – From Surgery to Society: Ukraine’s Reintegration Journey” event, at Bozar, Brussels.
The evening combined a photographic exhibition featuring portraits of rehabilitated soldiers taken by Ukrainian photojournalist Yuliia Ovsiannikova, with a panel discussion dedicated to the reintegration of war veterans and victims.
From rehabilitation and mental health to social inclusion, access to services, stigma reduction, and pathways back into employment, the discussion “Ukraine: Reintegration of Veterans and War Survivors” brought together a rich exchange between experts and lived experiences.
Speakers included two Ukrainian veterans, Ivan Voinov and Oleksandr Batalov, Olga Rudneva (Superhumans Center), Prof. Yan Vares (Lviv National Medical University) and Anna Kutsenko (“Barrier Free Movement”). The conversation highlighted the complexity and urgency of rebuilding lives beyond conflict, and the need for medical, social, and political dimensions to work together to support sustainable reintegration.
The welcome speeches were delivered by Mr Frank Vandenbroucke, Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health, H.E. Yaroslav Melnyk, Ambassador of Ukraine to Belgium , Ms Maryna Slobodnichenko, Ukraine's Deputy Minister of Health. Marijn Trio, VRT journalist specialising in Ukraine and Eastern Europe, moderated the event.
