Project description

80% of Africa’s trade is conducted via sea routes. The PORTZA project aims at enhancing trade and transport efficiency in key economic sectors in Tanzania to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth. PORTZA focuses on strengthening strategic transport corridors, facilitating trade efficiency, and boosting economic growth in both Africa and Europe. It is financed by the European Union as a flagship initiative under the Global Gateway Strategy.

By addressing both physical and non-physical barriers to trade, the project aims to improve transport systems, reduce trade costs, and promote sustainable mobility, ensuring a more competitive and interconnected regional economy.

The general objective of PORTZA is to enhance the operational capacity and efficiency of the Dar es Salaam Port, making it a more competitive and effective hub for international trade.

Key project pillars

  • Port performance - Improving efficiency and logistics at the Dar es Salaam Port to support seamless trade flows.
  • Trade facilitation - Streamlining customs, clearance processes, and regulatory frameworks to reduce trade costs.
  • Green mobility - Supporting the transition to low-carbon transport systems for a sustainable and eco-friendly future.
Through its integrated and forward-looking approach, PORTZA will strengthen Tanzania’s role as a key trade gateway, ensuring that transport and logistics infrastructure meets modern commerce and global sustainability standards.
